Rentals Anyone?
It took me awhile to decide what I would write about for this week's blog. I started thinking about conferences this week and what I will be sending home with parents. Then I thought about how nice it would be if all of the families had a home computer (or easy access) and I could give them some educational websites to go to with their children. In my school, I am positive that most of my students don't have computers at home. From here, I started thinking about when I was an undergrad and what I would do if I (or any of my collegues) wanted to use technology for educational purposes. The CTLT of course! They have a wide variety of technology available for check out & the people that work there also have knowledge of how people can use it. Now that I'm working with students & their families, I'm wondering if there's any sort of rental system like the CTLT in the "real world". Please share if there is because I would really like to recommend it to parents!!

Way to think outside of the box! We always think of ways to help home with school, but what a great idea of the computer system and being able to check them out. What a barrier break down for a lot of children and their families. I'm sure it would be interesting if a big company would sponsor something to this degree.I know that at a school district I did a sight visit in there was a company that purchased a whole computer lab for the system. I suppose it's a matter of researching and finding the right company. In our district we always recommend the local library, but that is not always convenient either. I will really have to mull this idea over in my mind. Thanks for the food for thought.
ReplyDeleteI like that idea. I was at a school last fall where there were families who didn't have computers in their homes. I think that would be a great way to get technology out and about. Then students could do a lot of different projects if computers could go home. I like your idea a lot. Good Job!!!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could help you with this. The only thing I can think of is the local library. I'm sure you are in the middle of conferences, but I would still send out the list. Some children may not have access at home, but at a friend's house. I also feel that if given these websites some parents may find time to take their children to the library to work on those websites, at least I hope that they would. I'm sorry I'm not much of a help. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteInteresting idea! It would be interesting for a school to have a checkout system... I wonder if that would be possible? Where a district purchased 20 laptops, used them during the day and then at night could check them out to students or could assign them to students as needed and requested by teachers. Maybe we could also think about lower cost alternatives like netbooks or ipads - they wouldn't be quite as expensive. It is a lot to consider and would have to fall in line with school policies, but might help to close some of the gap to access. Interesting thought....
