Digital Storytelling
Last week in class we learned about the digital storytelling project and got to see a few examples. They were all done very differently and I liked how we got to see these differences because it shows that we can take many angles to our story. My favorite one, by far, was the wedding one where the audience found out in the end that the whole story was really about her husband's brother! I really want to try to think of something that clever for my story, but I know it won't be that easy. I also know that I will have to find a few days to work on it because I haven't done anything like this since my freshman or sophomore year in college. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to remember. It will definitely be a good re-learning experience. I also would like to have my digital story be something that I could show my first graders. I think they would enjoy it and I could have an extention activity afterwards, depending on what my story is. I also liked the different points of view we got to watch in the examples. That is going to be another huge part of my story-deciding which point of view I would like to use. All in all, it sounds to me like I have a lot to think about and get started on!!

I think it would be really neat if you did a story and shared it with your first graders! They would love seeing what you are doing in class. I'm really excited for this assignment as well. I've been thinking about what story I want to tell and can't come up with anything that I really want to share. The stories we heard were all very interesting and I haven't found one that I think is as interesting as those. I agree that it's going to take me a little time to work on this assingment. I think the last time I've used this kind of technology was in CI 201 freshman year. When I was working on our ABC book, I couldn't even remember how to add sound! I'm going to have to play around a bit before I start working. Good luck with your project!
ReplyDeleteI am also very excited about the digital story telling project. I have a student teacher in my room working with me now and he is very good at digital/computer media. Some of my teaching partners and I were making a short little commercial presentation on Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). He was very helpful with getting us filmed on the Flip camera and then helping me edit on his Mac computer to the film process. I did go home and tell my husband we now need a Mac Notebook and an I-Pad. Somehow with five children I think that will be a goal in the future. It was so fun to have such a user friendly system. I'm really excited about making the digital story. I plan to do another one for the beginning of the year next year. I already know what and how I'm doing the ISU project.
ReplyDeleteI know now why my students love to journal and write stories! Just think how excited they get the more technology I am able to use with it!
I too am excited about this project, mainly because I can envision using this in my higher education classes. Not only is the motivation factor that language teachers so often find lacking in their students taken care of by a project such as this, but students are presented with an opportunity to enhance their critical thinking skills (in addition to the other skills needed for project completion). Students have to critically think and evaluate both their own stories (including the individual components and how they fit together) and their fellow students' stories.
ReplyDeletePutting my excitement aside for a moment, I still have tons of thinking to do myself as it seems as if all my stories are pretty predictable, even for example if I were to tell about sky diving (which I hadn't done yet), it would still be predictable, because I am still alive to tell the story.
Good luck to all of you in creating your stories.
This is always a fun, but often intimidating assignment! I like how you are going to try to make it something you can share with your 1st graders - please do. I am pretty flexible with this for the most part. Just remember - we all have interesting stories to tell!
